Wolfeboro NH Community Profile & Resources

Wolfeboro, NH became “America’s first summer resort” when, in 1763, Governor Wentworth built the first known summer home in the country on the shores of Lake Wentworth. Wolfeboro is located in the Lakes Region – a name the evokes images of blissful and lazy days of summer.

The town was granted by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth in 1759 to four young men of Portsmouth, and named Wolfeborough in honor of English General James Wolfe, who had been victorious at Quebec in 1759. In 1763, 2,300 acres (930 ha) were added to the 60 acres (24 ha) reserved for the governor. Colonial Governor John Wentworth, his nephew, established an estate on the site, known as Kingswood. Built in 1771 beside what is now called Lake Wentworth, this was the first summer country estate in northern New England. Settled in 1768, the town was incorporated in 1770.

The Lakes Region is comprised of 273 lakes and ponds – Winnesquam, Newfound and Squam are quite popular – but one lake dominates it: 72-square mile Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the state. Eight towns border the lake: Alton, Center Harbor, Gilford, Laconia, Meredith, Moultonborough, Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro. Water, as you might expect, is a big part of the fun here, from swimming and fishing, to waterparks, cruise ships, boat tours and nature centers. In winter there’s ice fishing, ice sailing, cross country and downhill skiing and snowmobiling.
